Bringing books back to life
Law student Sean Downey is helping to give a new lease of life to old educational books.
Anyone
clearing out their office is being asked to consider giving any
unwanted books to READ International, which is taking supplies to
school children in Tanzania.
‘There is no weight limit or time
limit other than the books have to be collected by the end of the
academic year,’ explained Sean. ‘There are strict sorting criteria for
books that can go to Tanzania, but we can take all books as those that
are not suitable for Africa go to a social venture called Better World
Books in Edinburgh, which sorts and sells the books on behalf of the
charity.’
Newcastle University’s collection will be heading to
Tanga province, where books will help fill school shelves and also
stock a library that is being renovated by volunteers during their
visit.
There are book drop-off points located in English (Percy
Building), Modern Languages (Old Library Building) and History
(Armstrong Building), as well as one in the Union Building.
Alternatively, staff can contact newcastle@readbookproject.org.uk to arrange for an office collection.
READ International works in partnership with the Tanzanian government to help improve the state of education in the country.
