1GOAL World Cup update

With the World Cup now over and the winner of the READ office sweepstake triumphantly collecting their bottle of champagne, we look to the lasting impact of the sporting event:

  • In the UK a fantastic 9,000 schools signed up with 1 million young people taking part across the UK!  Take a look at what they've been doing here.

  • The UK had the 3rd largest number of signups through the 1GOAL website, after Nigeria and the US, contributing over 18,000 voices to the campaign.

  • Secretary of State for International Development Andrew Mitchell met with leaders from across Africa at a summit hosted by the South African President Jacob Zuma.  Mr Mitchell MP told the press at the summit that the UK would continue to support universal primary education, but could not commit to increase spending without saving in other areas.

  • Interestingly Mr Mitchell noted that if the UK were to reassess their spending plans and not build two new aircraft carriers, it could single handedly afford to achieve education for all...
