How does it work?

The model

We operate an extremely low cost model which utilises the skills and enthusiam of young UK students supported by a minimal central team.We have just 7 full time members of staff in the London central office who provide support and advice for our 22 projects across the UK.

The Book Project process

Each Book Project relies on the time of 4 student project leaders who lead a team of roughly 25 volunteers. Each year the team works to raise £7500 and collect up to 25,000 books from local secondary schools. In addition they aim to deliver workshops and presentations to 10 local schools, encouraging school children to become involved in their global community.

Fundraising is ongoing throughout the year and our volunteers dream up hundreds of new and exciting ways of raising money.

Our Book Collections occur in two main drives during which projects contact local schools and arrange a date within one of their Book Collection weeks to collect their books. We are also able to arrange one off collections.

At the end of the academic year each project ships a container full of books to Dar es Salaam where 6 volunteers from each UK project meet it and travel with their books to their target region.

Once on location our volunteers work with the local education officials to distribute the books to 20 schools within the region. They also deliver books to the Regional Library and local Teacher Training Colleges and Resource Centres.
