READ Gifts

We see a world where young global citizens achieve development through the power of education.

Our READ Book Projects redistribute disused educational resources from schools in the UK to schools in Tanzania and Uganda where they can be used in the daily education of thousands of children across the country. Students in UK  schools are given global citizenship workshops and UK university students learn a wealth of new skills.

So far we have distributed 564,000 textbooks and changed the stories of almost 300,00 people in East Africa and the UK... but we have the potential to do so much more...

How can you help?

Buy a gift with extra meaning – choose one of our READ gifts and you will help us give a child an opportunity for an education.  It's simple - give a gift - educate a child.  And then these young people can reach their potential.

You can donate enough for  single books or for a variety of items in combination to tailor the gift package for your lucky recipient.

Your gift/s will come as a gift certificate within a READ card which can be personalised with your own message.  We can send the gift to you to send on to the person of your choice, or we can send it directly on your behalf.

Once you have bought a gift below just email rose.blackie@readinternational.org.uk informing us of what you bought, your Donation Reference (found on your charitygiving thank-you email) and your personalised message and we'll send it straight to you.

'Buy a Book' Range

At READ we think big! By 2012 we aim to have donated nearly 2 million books worth over £20 million to East Africa.  Your gift of books will help us towards this goal!

Books donated by READ are being used in the daily education of at least 240,000 children.  Thousands of other people of all ages are benefiting from access to resources in their public libraries.  Out of the gifts below a story set and local textbook refer to local books that we buy and books for a class and a school refer to disused books from UK schools that we send.

'Refurbish a Library' Range

We have an increasing awareness that it is not only the books themselves that deliver educational change, rather what is done with them and the environment in which they are used.

By actively refurbishing school libraries we will provide supportive learning environments for students. Your gift of paint will help us to make a library a bright and welcoming place to learn in.

Your gift of a desk or a chair will provide a space for pupils to work in as and when they need it, and will inspire them to engage in personal studying and reading.

A Full Library Refurbishment: This gift will fully redecorate and refurnish a school library, stock it full with locally sourced books and a selection of books from the UK, and create a haven for learning.

'Not Just Books' Range

Through our partnerships we use our distribution networks to deliver sports, science and stationery equipment to many of the schools we support.

We believe that engaging in extra curricular activities and having fun at school brings another dimension to the learning experience and is vital in helping to develop social skills.

Your gift of sports equipment can raise the spirit of the school, and give pupils another reason to turn up every day.

Your support will help us in our mission to improve access to education across the world and increase participation in the global community.  It wil provide an opportunity for an education to thousands of individuals in East Africa.
