READ Book Projects

"This is one of the most effective ways to alleviate poverty in Africa" - Hon Margaret Sitta MP, Minister for Education (Tz)

Through a community of student-run READ Book Projects, we mobilise university students to collect disused, high-quality Key Stage 3 and GCSE textbooks from UK secondary schools. Our student volunteers give presentations to schools pupils to promote student volunteering, young social enterprise, recycling and global citizenship.

Our operating model is simple and low-cost and makes best use of a large supply of motivated, enterprising, and enthusiastic voluntary labour.

To date, READ Book Projects have donated over 564,000 textbooks to 580 Tanzanian secondary schools and twelve regional libraries.

This summer we will deliver another 330,000 across 20 regions of Tanzania and 2 regions of Uganda- our biggest shipment to date!

This year is our first year of expansion into Uganda. All Scottish, Welsh and Irish projects will deliver resources to Ugandan secondary schools.  The English projects will continue to deliver resources to Tanzania.

The books will be used in the daily education of children working towards their Key Stage 3 and GCSE equivalent exams.

 Why??

Because we believe that everyone has a right to an education.

If you have disused textbooks that you wish to donate to READ, are interested in fundraising for us, or simply want more information please contact your nearest book project
