ISA Schools

Welcome to READ International! We are very excited to have partnered with The Independent Schools Association as the 'ISA Charity of the Year 2011'. With the help of ISA and both primary and secondary schools like yours, we will send our millionth book to East Africa this summer. Please read on about the many ways you can work with us to help us achieve this and beyond.

How can your ISA school work with READ?

READ have big ambitions for what the Independent Schools Association can achieve and there are so many ways to get involved. Read on, click here or download and read the document below to find out what the options are.

Communicating with READ

We suggest your school allocates one key point of contact for the READ/ISA project.

OPTION 1: DONATE BOOKS.

Would you like us to collect your old school books?

This is an extremely popular way for schools to be involved with READ International. We can arrange a book collection from your school for all/any used books currently sitting in cupboards.

We would ideally want to collect all of the books in one go – so if you can hold on to your books until December 2011, that would be preferable. If you require an urgent collection then we may be able to help, but we suggest you spend the year collating books for a December collection.

Would you like a READ Book Bin at your school?

Alongside our one-off book collections we would love to provide your school with a permanent READ Book Bin so throughout the year pupils and teachers can bring in books from home to donate. We collect absolutely any type of book. We will carefully sort the books, matching them to the Tanzanian/Ugandan syllabus and, if relevant, we send them to East Africa.  Any book not relevant to send (we don't take religious/political books for example) is sold online to generate much needed funding.  If it can't be sent or sold, we give it away in the UK or recycle it. It's a simple process. Dimensions: H: 1398mm, W: 651mm, D: 669mm. Capacity: 1 x 140 litre wheelie bin

Once again we would ideally want to collect all of the books in one go – so if you can start collecting straight away but hold on to all your collected books until December 2011, that would be preferable. We can provide you with cardboard boxes to neatly store your collected books until collection.

We would like the ISA network of 300 schools to help collect 1,000,000 books for East Africa in 2011!

OPTION 2: GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP

We can deliver an excellent extended school assembly presentation to your whole school to educate them about global citizenship and motivate the entire school to support this exciting READ/ISA partnership.

We would like to deliver presentations to every one of the 300 schools within the ISA network!

OPTION 3: FUNDRAISE

50p sends one book; £500 sends books to a whole school; £2,150 refurbishes and fills an entire school library! Any donation, no matter how big or small, really makes a difference!

We would like the ISA network of 300 schools to help raise a grand total of £500,000 to pay for the shipping of 1,000,000 books to East Africa in 2011.

To get involved in any of the ways above please click here.

How will your school benefit?

READ wants this to be a rewarding, engaging and exciting experience for all students and staff.

As well as having the opportunity to get rid of your unwanted books and receive free global citizenship presentations we will send you monthly newsletters, as outlined above, with league tables to track your progress and regular prizes for schools which are doing the best. There will also be a grand prize for the overall winning ISA school at the end of 2011.

READ International, with generous support from British Airways, can award four free return flights to Tanzania during Easter 2012! We will give two return flights to the winning school in each category. We assume that one teacher and one student from the school that tops each league table will be awarded the grand prize. The four winners will travel together, hosted by READ International and shown what all your hard-work means to schools in East Africa. Keep checking our monthly newsletter for more details!

To keep your school at the top of the 'ISA Charity of the Year' leader board each month you’ll need to collect as many books and raise as much money as possible. The first newsletter and leadership board will go out at end of February 2011, so no time like the present to get started. The minimum targets are very achievable! By the end of 2011 each school should aim to have collected 3,000 books and raised £1,500.

If you are interested in taking part please click here and we will send you more information about getting involved. If you have any problems or urgent queries not answered here please email us at isa@readinternational.org.uk.
